ERW ACTUALLY HELPS

Most of us go through high school wondering "When will I ever use this in life?" I, of course, am one of these people. I don't think it's necessary to sit through hours upon hours of history and science classes when neither of those subjects have anything to do with my future. I think the reason I love ERW so much is because even though we've only been in school for about two months I've already learned a lot that will actually benefit me in life. I didn't even know how to write a personal statement a couple weeks ago and I thought I was going to have to figure it out on my own while applying for college. I was so glad when I heard Ms. Fletcher say we were going to be writing personal statements. 😪 I now have a personal statement I am very proud of.
Slowly I've started to realize I've been using things and saying things I've learned in ERW. I used the word banal I don't even know how many times the past month and just the other day I said something was a "viable option". When I was reading those articles about college and taking gap years I thought it was stupid, but I actually learned something from it, so that's good. My vocabulary is already expanding and the school year isn't even close to being finished. Yeah, I complain about something as simple as vocabulary, but it is clearly useful and now I can sound all smart when I talk to my friends.
This class is really impacting all of our lives slightly. I have a funny story to tell that has to with this. Today at cheer practice we were huddled around our coach listening to the music we are going to be performing to and some girls had asked where we could find the music. Out of no where Myah Mayes yells, "I was about to say put it on the blog!" All of the ERW students immediately started laughing.
All of these things I've talked about aren't of much importance because they are small things, but this just goes to show that this class can be very very helpful!! We do have a lot of work and we are stressed out and this is totally cliché to say, but it's going to be worth it. Once all of this hard work is done, we are going to thrive.

I really want to thank Ms. Fletcher for putting up with all of our complaining. Sooner or later we will all realize that WE CAN ACTUALLY USE THIS CLASS FOR REAL LIFE.

  1. We have only been in this class for about two months and I've already found it sneaking its way into my life just like you said Brooke! I spend half my time thinking about the next time I am going to bog. I walked around with my personal statement last week shoving it in peoples' faces trying to get them to read it. The only reason I've built enough strength to begin college applications and try to get my life started is because of this class. The little things we do and learn in ERW encourage and inspire me to do more than just write a couple essays. Not to sound cheesy or anything, but it has helped me start writing out the rest of my life. Yeah, that sounded cheesy.

  2. All I can say is that I have been thinking the same thing since the beginning of the year. Last year, one of my close friends was taking ERW with Ms. Fletcher and she told me a lot about it. I was actually slightly excited to take it when I heard it was mostly writing about what ever you wanted to write about. No more set formulas for writing such as the tedious 5 paragraph book report.
A great example is when we read the commencement speech "This Is Water." Mr. Wallace in that speech stated that education is about learning HOW to think, and I think this calss is the first class to do that for me. This class is teaching us how to think for ourselves. Everything is open to discussion and random topics of conversation come up frequently, keeping everything fresh and interesting. It may not be the most organized class, and a whole bunch of work came out of nowhere all of a sudden, but it is the most thought provoking class I've ever had. There is at least once or twice a week when I leave class with something to ponder that night, aand I expect that I'll only enjoy it more throughout the year.

  3. After only being in this class for a few months I already feel that slowly but surely my writing is improving. Although this class has been a lot more homework it's changed my perspective on writing and made me want to write more in my spare time. I'm extremely happy I took this class, because a regular english class doesn't go this deep into writing.

  5. This is totally true. This class has completely impacted our lives in a helpful way. I've always loved writing but being in class, I can already see how much my skills have been improving. I feel more prepared with just a few months of being in this class and it's a relieving feeling, especially with the pressure of college creeping its way through. Even if some of the students don't want to admit it, this class, despite the stress by procrastination, has helped us relieve the stress and prepare us for the next step.

  6. I couldn't agree more. This class doesn't have as much work as others, but even with a small amount of work, it has so much more of an impact. If I was still in regular English, I would have been reviewing elementary rules for the remainder of my high school career; Not prepared for college English in any way. This class is entertaining, engaging, and extremely helpful. It takes the hardest parts of writing and makes it seem as if it's not even worth stressing about. I think Fletcher's way of teaching is much more effective than any other class. I'm learning and making memories while I prepare for college in a successful manner. This post captures the essence of the class and displays how it has made its way into our lives.
