Social Media

Social media is actually a scary thing. The government uses it. Companies use it. Hackers use it. Our parents use it. It's just an all- around scary thing.

I know people who have shut down almost all of their social media accounts after applying to colleges or who have put everything on private when they go to a job interview. They do this because they don't want to be judged on who they are online by people who could determine their future.

The scary part is that even if you delete your account or put something on private, it'll still be there.  I learned from watching Scandal (a great show, by the way) that almost nothing can completely be erased once it has been put online. This makes me cautious, but I don’t think cautious enough. I’m aware that when I input information for a social media profile, I’m giving personal information to who ever sits on the other side of the screen. Does that stop me? No.

So I guess my question is: Do we really care about our privacy if we willingly give out our personal information?

  1. I don't think anyone should be putting their personal information on the internet at all. People should think twice before posting something that might affect them later on in the future. I also think those people put it upon themselves when they don't get the job because they're talking bad about people and posting crazy party pictures.

    1. I am a little upset because everything I just typed out disappeared so this probably won't be as good as the first one I wrote. But, I agree with you on how scary it is. Some people just put out way too much information out there for people to see. It also worries me that bosses are going to abuse this and not hire someone for the wrong reasons. It can also be creepy when you get those very specific advertisements that just prove that not only can people get information from your social media, but also from your web browsing. In a way they are just trying to be more efficient with selling their stuff, but knowing it can be abused is troubling.

  3. I agree with you completely on this. Your post kind of made me think of something else. How dumb is it that people like to complain about the lack of privacy but THEY'RE THE ONES PUTTING THEIR WHOLE LIFE OUT FOR EVERYONE TO SEE? The second anyone mentions that the government is able to see our information people start freaking out, but the majority of those acting this way are the ones who are constantly on social media telling everyone what's going on. For example, if the government were to look on my Twitter I wouldn't care. At all. Yeah that's a slight breach of privacy because I do have my profile set up for friends only, but if I'm willing to tweet about certain things then I'm clearly not trying to be very private.

  4. Hmmm I definitely agree. It is scary. Especially as teenagers, we're all so willing to give things up on social media, and if that isn't already bad, we do it KNOWING that we have the government watching all of the things we do. I'm also one of those people. But does that mean that I don't care about my privacy? Definitely not. Just because I share pieces of my life with my "followers" or "friends" online, does not mean that I'm giving it all up. I always make sure not to share too much.

  5. Wow, Uchechi that was a really good question. I completely agree with you. Why do we make a big deal out of privacy if we willingly put our stuff out there? Sure, it might just be a picture of our breakfast, but that can be enough to determine our location. The thing you said about people shutting down all their social medias after applying to colleges made me think now! It's crazy how despite all the negative things that could happen as a result of putting our information on the internet, people will still continue to have profiles on social medias.

  6. This is definitely the truth. However, I would hope to think that most of us understand this as much as we do. Unfortunately, many people do not understand the consequences of what they put online for all to see. In my case, I know I have nothing to hide. What we post online is our choice. We have become completely adapted to the means of social media and we're becoming more knowledgeable as the years go on. Yes, it's a scary thing to know that there is always someone watching. Yet, what we put out into the world of followers and friends should be minimal anyway. Our privacy is always going to be exposed in the tiniest bit no matter what in this generation of technology, some of us just have to realize that.
